10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects

outdoor spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is not exciting for most of us. But it should be done. As the holidays and winter end and we begin looking forward to spring, something inside of us tells us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve piled up over the winter.

But who says spring cleaning is only for the interior of a house?
The exterior of your home could probably use some refreshing after a cold, dreary winter, too!

It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning

Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the curb appeal of your home in Springfield, and, more importantly, will provide much-needed care and maintenance that will save money over the years ahead.

1. Gutter Cleaning

Spring is the optimal time to clean your gutters, because a lot of leaves and debris pile up in the fall and winter. The pollen count is at its highest in the spring, making a big mess in your gutters if they are not properly cleaned.

Plus, pests and critters are looking for places to build their homes in spring, so getting your gutters cleaned will help stop an infestation in your home.

Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the inside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, and rust stains and restoring them to a nice appearance.

2. Window Cleaning

Residential window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. First floor windows will not cause you too much of a problem, but any second and third floor windows will be tougher to reach.

Cleaning windows by hand is a tough job, and will require a lot of tools, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the recommended solution to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.

3. Pressure Washing

You aren’t going to want clean gutters and windows on a dirty house. Which means you are going to want to pressure wash your home too!

Pressure washing is fast, effective and affordable. You can pressure clean your house, patio furniture, concrete patios, porches and walkways with not too much effort. It will eliminate dirt and mud so they will not permanently stain your home, and you can also stop the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.

4. Driveway Cleaning

Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a deep cleaning may seem silly because you will still be driving on it, but, a clean, well-cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.

A professional pressure washing company can do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it’s concrete, asphalt, brick or some other material. Also consider adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really help it pop!

5. Patio Cleaning

Your home’s patio probably gets the most use during the summer, so it can be easy to overlook it in the winter since you are not doing as much outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio might be in pretty rough shape the first time you walk onto it in the spring.

Soap and water – and a little elbow grease – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you notice signs of mold or algae, you need to consider a more aggressive option, like professional power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer long.

6. Roof Cleaning

Algae and moss are typical roof problems in Springfield. While you are cleaning the exterior of your home, it’s a great time to pressure clean your home’s roof too, but you will have to use a different method than the one you use for the rest of your home’s exterior cleaning.

If you notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is probably the cause. Moss is usually obvious, too. These particles cannot be wiped off shingles, nor can you power wash the roof of your home. Both of these methods will destroy the shingles on your home’s roof.

The best method for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach solution and let it sit. This solution will kill all organic organisms on your home’s roof without lowering its lifespan.

7. Clean up the Front

The front of your home is what most people see, so make the best impression you can for visitors and for yourself! Returning home to a clean exterior will immediately improve your day, and will even motivate you to spend a lot more time outside.

You can clean your front porch with detergent and water or a good power wash. Wipe cobwebs and dirt off of the front door, and consider painting it for a really bright look! Clean forgotten areas including the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.

8. Organize Garden Tools

You’ll be spending much more time outdoors, so spring is an excellent opportunity to organize whatever you will need for outdoor work.

Gardening tools and pool care equipment should all have a specific area outside your home – a place that it is safe from harsh weather and not in sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Spending the time to organize in the spring allows you to enjoy the exterior of your home so much more during the time of year that you are going to spend the most time outside.

9. Lawn Care & Landscaping

Your lawn, trees and bushes can make a major impact on the overall look of your home.

Kill weeds around the exterior of your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up areas where you’ll be planting later on and sweep off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed killer to make yard maintenance easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.

10. Clean the Grill

After being unused for several months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food particles from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family ill.

Wet it down to get rid of ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber (so you do not leave behind metal particles that can sometimes get into food) and a basic dish soap or degreaser.
